Mash Tun / Lauter TunFor you non-brewers, this is where the grain is mashed, or steeped like tea. See the Brewing Process for details on how this works. This is a 10 gallon Igloo insulated cooler. Inside is a false bottom. The grain sits on top of the false bottom and the liquid is drained from below the false bottom and out the 1/2" ball valve. See the false bottom below. There is a PT-100 temperature probe above the ball valve which sends temperature readings back to the PID controller. |

In this photo the temperature probe is very short and only extends into the tun by about 1/2" and is not very accurate. I have a much longer probe there now but never took a second photo to show you that probe. Note the false bottom. This is actually Phil's Phalse Bottom which is commercially available at most any homebrew store or directly from their web site at http://www.listermann.com
